SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shock waves are pneumatically generated waves. They are applied to soft tissues. They are perfectly tolerated in terms of pain and do not require sedation. The radial shock wave equipment is made up of a compressor, the gun/radial probe that contacts the patient’s skin, and the control monitor to determine the parameters of intensity, frequency, and number of shots.

Depending on its generator of greater or lesser energy and the type of beam generated, we differentiate two main types of shock waves –

  • Focal – Greater energy and spot and deep beam.‍
  • Radials – Lower energy and fan beam and more shallow.

Our Finest SWT Approach

Pacific Physiotherapy focuses on providing top-notch care that doesn’t require surgical interventions. For persistent pain and chronic injuries, our shock wave therapy is a simple yet highly effective treatment option. A painful location is treated with these controlled sound waves in an effort to hasten the body’s natural healing process, increasing blood flow and metabolic rate, which promotes full regeneration of injured tissue.

Focal Shock Waves

The focal shock waves penetrate the tissue, focusing all their energy in a single, deep, and previously selected point. We distinguish 3 different generators of focal shock waves –

  • Electrohydraulic
  • Piezoelectric
  • Electromagnetic

How Does Shockwave Treatment Work?

The therapeutic results obtained with shock wave treatment can be spectacular. We observe different effects –

  • Elimination of calcium deposits by fragmentation.
  • Formation of new bone and delayed consolidation in fractures
  • Analgesic effects
  • Anti-inflammatory effects
  • Temporary increase in muscle building
  • formation of new blood vessels

For How Long Will Each One Be Administered?

Depending on the condition being addressed, SWT sessions may take anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes. 4 to 7 sessions, spaced one week apart, is the norm. Many people feel significantly less discomfort or get complete pain relief after just one or three sessions. The therapy reduces or eliminates your pain and helps you move about freely again.

We may employ SWT in different medical specialties, for example, nephrology, urology, dermatology, etc. Conditions and symptoms that we can treat with shock wave therapy –

  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Chronic Pain
  • Golfer’s Elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Stiff big toe, big toe arthritis
  • Jumper’s Knee (patellar tendinitis)
  • Muscle/ Connective Tissue Injuries
  • Plantar Fascistic
  • Shin Splints
  • Shoulder/Rotator Cuff Pain
  • Stress Fractures (bone healing)
  • Tendon and Muscle Contractures
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Trigger Points
  • Heel, neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Trigger points
  • Back pain

Do Shockwaves Hurt?

The pain is tolerable or just annoying without being painful. Perhaps some patient in the acute phase has greater sensitivity, but in this case the frequency of the impulses is increased slightly.

Do Shockwaves Have Side Effects?

In general, they are very well tolerated, but in certain patients we cannot safely apply them. In patients with coagulation disorders, or anticoagulants, we run the risk of causing hematomas. Nor should it be applied to patients with acute infections or systemic diseases. We do not apply shock waves to growing children.

Shock wave therapy is safe, non-aggressive or bloody, and highly effective. It does not hurt and is generally very well tolerated, and can be performed in the consultation itself. It requires highly qualified personnel and some professional experience to obtain the best results.
